About Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy is a category 1 tropical cyclone which is expected to hit north-east coast of US in the night hours from Monday and Tuesday. It will hit Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey and probably continue to Virginia, West Virginia and than to the north. At Wednesday 2 a.m. of the local time it is expected to enter to Pennsylvania and than continues to the north to New York State during Thursday. The other day will slowly disappear upon Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Canada.

What does it mean category 1 and what we can expect?

Category 1 is from Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale the slowest storm of 5 by the means of the velocity of winds. Such tropical cyclone may produce some damage. Unfortunately it is expected to mix with some other climatologically units presented in the area. That might bring intense rains with snow fall in the Appalachian Mountains and high ocean waves.

Why it is called Sandy?

The name of the hurricane was given by National Hurricane Center, Miami, Florida. In fact there is a storm on the beginning, which receives a pre-chosen first name of a person. Next storm in the area will be called Tony. There are pre-chosen names till 2017. These will be than reused. Every year has 21 male and female names starting with A ending up by W, few letters are not used. For other regions there are different naming lists. These lists are here that general public can remember the storms easily. This system started for Atlantic Ocean in 1953.

Where does it originated and why it happen?

Tropical storm was formed in western Caribbean. Condense of the humid air upon warm ocean waters helps to start tropical cyclone and gives it energy. When it enters upon land it’s called post-cyclone and slowly start to dissipate.
